Doc Name: Susan Mitchell - US Horse Rescue & Welfare

This documentary project is part of a national doc series about people doing good in their state. The project was created by a company out of New York called Radical Media. I wrote, directed, shot, and edited each film (5 in total). This video is one of those 5 short films. Each story was focused on a different person who makes a difference in a unique way. This story is about Susan Mitchell, president of US Horse Rescue and Welfare. Their mission is to save horses from being abused and sent to slaughter. They work with young people and adults to teach proper horse care, and about the dangers domestic horses face in our country. They have rescued many amazing animals, and they use their horses for therapy. This is for veterans with PTSD, and others who have gone through trauma.

My vision for the film was to be an open observer. I researched what they do and the amazing impact they have on the well being of these beautiful animals. With all of my films I find my rhythm by listening and being present with my subject. I decided to film with anamorphic lenses to capture the grandness of the Horse Rescue's mission, and to help create the feeling of a wide open expanse, even though we were on an enclosed ranch. There is an energy to each person and each place. You just have to be open to it. Then you just let the magic of that energy guide you.
